Mobile Outreach Van Conversion: How Field Van Built an ADA-Compliant Mobile Resource Center for San Francisco

Mobile Outreach Van Conversion: How Field Van Built an ADA-Compliant Mobile Resource Center for San Francisco

At Field Van, we’re known for building premium camper vans—but custom van conversions can do so much more than support life on the road. In this project, we partnered with a San Francisco county program to design and build a mobile outreach van focused on serving the local homeless population.

This fully customized Ford Transit outreach van conversion functions as a mobile resource center, giving outreach teams the tools they need to connect with individuals, provide services, and support real change—directly in the community.

If you’re searching for a mobile outreach vehicle, ADA-compliant van conversion, or custom fleet solution, this build showcases what’s possible.

Built for Urban Outreach: Ford Transit 148 Extended

This project starts with a Ford Transit 148 Extended, configured with rear-wheel drive for optimal performance in urban environments like San Francisco. While many Field Van builds prioritize off-road capability, this van is purpose-built for city navigation, reliability, and efficiency.

The cab is equipped with modern safety and convenience features, including:

  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Electronic rearview mirror
  • Large Ford touchscreen interface

These features help ensure safe operation in dense, high-traffic areas—critical for a vehicle that will be driven daily throughout the city.

Mobile Office + Resource Center on Wheels

The core of this build is a fully functional mobile office workspace, designed to bring essential services directly to those in need.

Inside, the layout supports:

  • Resume building and job applications
  • Workshop and program sign-ups
  • Access to digital resources and online support

Swivel seating in the front cab, paired with a secondary rotating chair and modular tables, creates a flexible meeting space for one-on-one conversations.

To keep teams connected, we installed a Cradlepoint cellular internet system—a powerful, city-optimized solution that delivers reliable connectivity even in areas where satellite systems struggle due to tall buildings.

High-Capacity Power System for All-Day Operation

A reliable power system is essential for any mobile outreach van conversion. This build features over 1,000 amp hours of battery capacity, allowing the van to operate independently throughout the day.

The system powers:

  • Multiple laptops and charging stations
  • Interior lighting and workspace systems
  • 12V air conditioning unit
  • Integrated heating system

Supporting components include a solar charging system, inverter, battery monitor, and control panel—ensuring efficient energy management at all times.

Secure Storage + Charging for Equipment

Outreach teams require secure, organized storage for devices and supplies. This van includes a custom-built locking cabinet designed specifically for technology management.

Key features:

  • Storage and charging for up to 15–20 laptops
  • Integrated power outlets at every shelf
  • Lockable, reinforced construction for security

Additional storage solutions include upper cabinets with built-in power, drawers for paperwork, and heavy-duty adjustable shelving for larger equipment like tables, chairs, and outreach materials.

ADA-Compliant Van Conversion with Mobility Lift

Accessibility is at the core of this build. This is a fully ADA-compliant van conversion, designed to ensure equal access for all individuals.

The rear of the van features a wheelchair mobility lift with a 500-pound capacity, allowing users to safely enter and exit the vehicle. Inside, the layout maintains proper aisle width and includes an accessible workstation.

The lift also doubles as a practical solution for loading equipment—adding another layer of functionality to the design.

Built-In Comfort for Long Days in the Field

To support outreach teams working long hours, this van includes several comfort-focused features:

  • Narrow-profile fridge with freezer
  • Microwave for meals on the go
  • Roof ventilation fan for airflow
  • Integrated heating and air conditioning systems

These additions help create a sustainable, comfortable working environment—no matter the weather.

Smart Features for Real-World Use

This custom mobile outreach vehicle includes thoughtful details that enhance daily operations:

  • Rear door panel with built-in whiteboard for communication
  • Red lighting option for low-light or command-center scenarios
  • Bright, clean interior lighting for a welcoming atmosphere

Every feature was designed to support efficiency, adaptability, and ease of use in real-world outreach situations.

A Custom Van Conversion That Gives Back

This project highlights the versatility of custom van conversions. While Field Van is known for adventure vehicles, builds like this demonstrate how the same craftsmanship can be used to serve communities and support meaningful initiatives.

This mobile outreach van for homeless services will allow teams in San Francisco to meet people where they are—providing resources, support, and opportunities for change.
