Since 1989, the Feld family has been at the forefront of crafting remarkable off-road camper vans designed to withstand the harshest outdoor conditions. For three decades, these vehicles were created under the banner of Sportsmobile West, a division of Sportsmobile Inc. However, in 2021, Sportsmobile West concluded its licensing agreement and proudly rebranded as Field Van, embarking on a thrilling new chapter in our long van building history.

In an era where adventure calls and working remotely has become commonplace, the Field Van camper van has become the embodiment of freedom, flexibility, and exploration in the modern era. For many, these vans have redefined the travel / work balance, providing opportunities to connect with nature and embark on unforgettable journeys. Let’s explore how our company has impacted modern-day travel.
I started out with the given prompt of writing this to share some of my favorite “Summer camping tips,” and more specifically, places that are especially nice to take your camper van. So, I decided to consult the experts, and as I was talking with my kids about some of our favorite seasonal trips, my 5-year-old blurts out, “But Dad, I love all the seasons!” Reflecting on that statement, I realized, so do I. So much so that I don’t really have a favorite season, but simply enjoy where we live and that every season has something different to offer. So why limit this to the cliché “Summer camping” only? Especially when, to me, the best thing, and perhaps the entire point of owning a Field Van, is that it makes all the seasonal activities more accessible, more fun, and more comfortable. It’s even opened up a few activities we wouldn’t do without a van. So here are a few of our favorite seasonal spots and some tips we’ve picked up along the way.

In the world of van life enthusiasts, one name stands out– Alan Feld. Not only is he Jonny Feld’s dad, but he was also the visionary behind Sportsmobile West. Growing up as an Army kid, Alan’s life was marked by constant moves, exposing him to diverse cultures and ways of living. This early adaptability played a pivotal role in shaping the man who would become the “Van Guy” of his high school years.

The sky’s the limit with Field Van’s fully customizable Range Series. After 30 plus years of building custom vans, Field van has developed a variety of what we call “Semi-custom” floor plans that fit 80% of our customers needs. However, when you really want to push the envelope, or maybe just have a particular design or function in mind, that is when we move into our full custom Range series builds. Recently we were lucky enough to have one of our amazing customers bring their custom Range series van back to home base here in our factory, so that we could do a walk-through tour of their van. In our YouTube video tour, you’ll see that this fully customized vehicle has all the features necessary for a truly unforgettable adventure. So let’s take a look! On this Range Series build our customers came to us with a particular need in mind. While they wanted the van to be ready for outdoor adventures and traveling, they also wanted a vehicle that would be the star player when it came to tailgating their favorite sporting events. With a flip-down counter for serving snacks, two refrigerators – one inside, and one accessible from outside (gotta have your tailgating beverages ready!) – and an exterior propane hookup for barbecues, you’ll have everything you need to enjoy tailgating. If it gets too cold or too hot, head inside the van and watch the pregame on the built-in television and hang out in the spacious rear seating area.
Members of the Field Van team charged into the Mojave desert to watch and support long time friend and customer Mario Cabrales. Mario bought a van back in 2016 and has been living it up ever since. Mario has a 4×4 Mercedes Sprinter with the S-1 plan and pop top. His 6’5” frame uses every inch of this van to the extreme. He packed in a larger 7 cubic foot refrigerator and has every necessary exterior accessory including off road lights, winch, roof rack with solar, rear bumper with extra recovery gear, suspension upgrades, and the list goes on. Mario’s van is truly ready for any adventure but on this crisp yet sunny January day in the California desert, it was time for some racing.
The most important thing before embarking on any adventure is being prepared. Having the right gear is crucial for a successful trip. The difference between having a great time or ending up stranded is usually due to having the proper recovery equipment as well as the knowledge for correct use. One key piece of recovery equipment we always bring on off road excursions is the Maxtrax system.
Imagine if you could pick up your home, and take it everywhere with you, that is our Meadow Series Conversion. To give you a better look into all the amazing amenities these rigs have to offer, let’s have a look at one of our Meadow M-1 Series.
It was a cold, rainy December evening when the employees at Field Van could hear a strange sound outside the showroom windows. It was the sound of hooves on the roof, and as the employees peered outside, they couldn’t believe their eyes. There was Santa Claus, standing atop the Field Van dealership, his trusty sleigh parked nearby.
Our Summit Series floor plans are what we like to call “legendary plans.” These plans stand the test of time for functional living space and have always been some of our best selling layouts. However at Field Van, every van we build is custom made to fit the specific needs of its owner. Even in the timeless designs of the Summit series we recognize that it is the small details and subtle design changes that really make the van work for each individual. It is for this reason that we offer a range of options for every floor plan design we build, allowing us to transform our “standard plans” into a customized layout just for you. So let’s have a look at one of our Summit S1 series floor plans, but with a little bit of a twist.
The year is 2022 and the snow along the West coast was dismal to say the least. But it was time for the three bodies one brain ratpack AKA Vicky, Cody, and Jack, to head out for the annual spring ski trip. Using all our might combined it was not until a week prior to departure that we came up with a ski route for this year’s trip. The snow chasers plan was to hit Oregon first, up to Washington, over to Idaho and back down to Tahoe area to close out the trip. Cody and Vicky were planning to leave a couple days before myself with the plan to meet for day or two at Mt. Bachelor to start it off. I pulled in just before ten o’clock on Thursday to join Cody and Vicky at an artful RV park in downtown Bend, the van door flung open and I was greeted by a shot and disco lights, it finally really felt like the ski trip had commenced.
The Field Van crew headed to Adventure Van Expo in Eagle, Colorado and these are some of the stories that took flight! Headed into the week of the Eagle show the stoke level was high as the sales crew was deciding who will get to go to this year’s Colorado show. Somehow the new guy was able to pull the shortest stick and he hit the road faster than a Bald Eagle closing in on some prey.
Charity events bring great support and awareness to their causes and typically great energy from the participants. The Big Hunt Open in Reno, Nevada held on September 10th proved to do just that. While helping to raise around $25K for Caring for Angels and Make ‘Em Smile Foundation, the team at Field Van got in on the fun. Field Van sponsored the 12th hole. A 151 yd par 3 at the Lakeridge golf course in Reno. Two vans were on display and were, fortunately, able to dodge a few errant shots from some of the participants. The tournament was a scramble format with 4 players on a team. Each player would hit their ball and then play from where their team’s best shot ended up. Groups were teeing off at 8 AM and the next round of golfers at 1:30 PM. Team Field Van had the afternoon time slot. For the morning round, our team spent time showing off the vans and we were also tasked with explaining the contests being held on hole 12. A hole-in-one would win a new driver or $500 cash. In a bunker short and left of the green, a yellow umbrella was sticking out of the sand. The umbrella was there to mark that bunker as “The Hoff” bunker. If a player’s shot went into that bunker they were instructed to write their name on the ball and leave it in the sand. At the end of the tournament, all the balls would be collected and one winner would be chosen to receive an autographed photo of David Hasselhoff. The Hasselhoff reference is from the all-time classic golf movie Happy Gilmore. The line goes, “You spend more time in the sand than David Hasselhoff” referencing the actor’s time as a character on the show Baywatch. Many players aimed for that bunker wanting the glory of the Hoff prize to be displayed above their mantle. It’s funny how it was harder for these guys to hit it in the sand when they were trying to…probably should have aimed for the green!
When an Adventure Van Expo is held in a place like Bend, OR it is not hard to find willing volunteers from the Field Van team to make the trip. Bend is a growing city in Central Oregon that boasts a flowing river through town and great vibes with unique breweries and restaurants abound. About a 9 hour drive from Fresno, our team left on Thursday so we would be able to enjoy some time in the area before the expo begins. With set-up Friday evening it would give us most of the day Friday for some activities. We decided to pack it in!
Overland Expo West is one of the largest events of its kind anywhere in the world. It showcases anything and everything that involves vehicle dependent camping and traveling. There are hundreds of vendor booths to visit and purchase gear from, education classes you can sign up for, food, music, good times, and great people! What really sets this event apart from a typical trade show is the on-site camping. Vendors are camping in their booths throughout the venue, often times showcasing the usefulness of their product by using it for the weekend during the Expo. There is also a large connected campground that allows for visitors to stay on site, mingle with the vendors after hours and enjoy a campfire type of atmosphere sharing stories of places travelled and challenges bested.
Nice article up from our friends at Expedition Portal:
The first thing that comes to mind for me when I hear the word camping is a quiet outdoor setting deep in nature. I picture sitting in a beach chair on a breezy coastline or staring at a campfire high in the mountains. The smell of salty air or a thick forest fills my head. I can almost hear the crashing of the waves or the cackling of the fire. The thoughts of these sights, smells, and sounds can bring an instant feeling of euphoria.
This Fresno company is big in the #Vanlife world — and now they’ve got a new start.
All-terrain vans are on a new adventure with a new name.
After a yearlong hiatus, a local business is back to outfitting vans for off-road and other utility uses, but under a different name and with a new sales plan.
There is nothing better than experiencing nature with our girls. One of their favorite activities is to go exploring. We accomplish this with walks around the neighborhood, hiking, bike rides and the favorite adventure of all is camping in our van.
It was an overcast Thursday afternoon when I cut out early from work and met up with my good buddies Sean, better known as “S.P.” and Mike, or “Mikey Mo”.
